On Saturday night, Hollywood and Washington notables gathered for the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in DC. Though recently touted as “nerd prom,” the affair has become a yearly excuse for the press to poke fun at Washington, for Washington to poke fun at the press and for everyone to poke fun at Joe Biden. (In other words, a rollicking good time.)
The event also offers the president an opportunity to show off his comedy chops, and for the second year in a row, President Obama did not disappoint. He fired off jabs at everyone and everything from CNN to Taylor Swift to George W. Bush’s new presidential library. And, proving himself to be the hippest commander in chief ever, he even snuck in references to Jay-Z lyrics and BuzzFeed. And as any good comedian does, he also worked in a few quips at his own expense. “These days, I look in the mirror and I have to admit,” he said, “I’m not the strapping young Muslim socialist I used to be.”

Obama also found some opportunities to poke fun at himself and the media all in one. He discussed his poor basketball skills at the recent White House Easter Egg Hunt: “I took 22 shots and made two of them. Two hits and twenty misses. The executives at NBC asked, ‘What’s your secret?’” CNN wasn’t safe from his snark either: “I admire their commitment to covering all sides of the story, just in case one of them happens to be accurate.”
Here are some highlights from Obama’s turn at the mic:
The President made a hard act to follow for Conan O’Brien, who served as the night’s comedy headliner. O’Brien also riffed heavily on the media: “I see the Huffington Post has a table. If you’re here, who’s covering Miley Cyrus’ latest nip slip?” The late-night veteran also directed some jabs toward the GOP, mentioning Senator Marco Rubio, “or, as he’s known in the Republican party, ‘our black guy.’” O’Brien then released this zinger toward Obama: “Your hair is so white, it could be a member of your Cabinet.”
But O’Brien couldn’t top this brilliant pre-recorded spoof on Steven Spielberg’s next cinematic endeavor, entitled Obama. After the success of Lincoln, why not give the presidential biopic another go? And who better to play Obama than ultimate method actor Daniel Day-Lewis? Watch the parody here:
